David Mech on the inaccuracy of the term “alpha wolf.”  The term came from observing only packs in captivity, where alphas do emerge, within social dynamics not unlike homosexual rape in prisons.  But would you take the behavior of humans in prisons as a fine example of how humans naturally behave?  Then why, you might ask, did we find it so easy to project the pathological wolf behavior of hierarchy onto the natural pack structure of a family? - Jason
