Father Bonnecamp’s map of 1749 called the Clarion River Riviere Au Fiel, “River of Hate,” because it marked the southern boundary of the Seneca and the northern boundary of the migrating Lenni Lenape. The Allegheny River itself remembers the name of the legendary Allegwi. Finding the natives of our bioregion presents a challenge; the Seneca came this south only recently. But the non-Haudenosaunee Oñgwe’oñwe, later called Mingos, lived as far south as West Virginia, and later migrated into the Ohio Country. I’ve started thinking it might make more sense for us to focus on learning Mingo, and with great online resources to learn it like this one, we have some luck! - Jason
